nib adjustment, correction, and tuning services

Note: mail order service will begin fall or winter 2026. Please subscribe here if you would like to be notified when it is available.

what I can fix:

  • hard starts
  • scratchiness
  • inconsistent ink flow
  • excessively dry or wet nibs
  • nibs that generally don’t write as well as they’re supposed to
  • bent nibs (depending on severity)
  • …and more.

I’m also happy to help diagnose an issue if you think something is wrong but aren’t quite sure what the problem is.

I specialize in fixing quality control errors (it’s what I enjoy most!) – absent specific preferences communicated to me, I try to make pens write as the manufacturer intended.

process:

  1. If you have a pen that writes less well than you’d hoped, or differently than you’d expected, fill in this form to start the process.
  2. After reviewing your submission, I’ll let you know if I need any additional details before starting work – otherwise, I’ll email you the shipping instructions.
  3. After I receive your package, I’ll add it to my queue and will give you an estimate as to how long the wait will be.
  4. During this time, I may have follow-up questions to better narrow down what your preferences might be as I fix any issues I find, so please keep an eye on your email.
  5. After the work is done, I’ll send you an invoice for the adjustment work and the return shipping cost, and I’ll ship your package back after it’s paid.
  6. After receiving the pen or pens back:
    • If you’re happy with the writing, great!
    • If it’s better but not quite fully to your liking, send the pen or pens back to me a second time and I’ll pay for shipping and will make final adjustments for free, since it’s important for me to learn to get things right!
    • If you are completely unhappy with the writing after the second time, I am happy to work with you on an appropriate remedy.

pricing:

order type standard price expedited price**
Sub-$50 pens (e.g. Kakunos, ECOs) $20* per pen $30 per pen
$50-400 pens (e.g. Esties, Custom 823s) $30 per pen $50 per pen
$400-1000 pens (e.g. Homo Sapiens, M1000s) $40 per pen $70 per pen
$1000+ pens (e.g. urushi pens, limited editions) $50 per pen $90 per pen
bent nibs: attach photos to form for quote $50-100 per pen $75-150 per pen

* Equitable pricing for sub-$50 pens: On a per-client basis, work on up to three sub-$50 pens will be invoiced at $10 per pen instead of the listed $20 if the client is not also requesting modifications to pens over $50.

This is because I think good writing should be accessible to everyone.

It is still likely to take me approximately the same amount of time to work on an inexpensive pen compared to an expensive pen, but I want to make sure that everyone has a chance to make sure their favorite pens write nicely.

  • Examples for equitable pricing for sub-$50 pens:
    • First-time client shipping a Kakuno, an ECO, and a Metropolitan: $30 + shipping
      • Same client subsequently shipping two more ECOs: $40 + shipping
    • Different first-time client shipping a Kakuno and an Estie: $50 + shipping

** Expedited pricing: Expedited orders will be placed at the start of the queue in the order received. In general terms, I should be able to ship expedited packages back out within days in most circumstances and nearly always by the following Monday at the latest. Please contact me in advance if you need a specific timeline.

things to note:

  • I am not offering nib grinds at this time (subscribe here to be notified by email when available).
    • Pens that were self-tuned at home with grit or mylar paper likely have uneven surfaces, and as such may require re-grinding the nib.
  • I would prefer not to work with pens that require disassembly of glued-together parts in order to adjust the nib, but may accept requests for that type of pen if it seems likely that disassembly would not be required to fix the particular issue you are experiencing.
  • It is possible that not every pen will be suited for your writing angle and pressure, and as such I may not be able to make every pen write perfectly in line with your preferences. I am still willing to review your form and discuss your request.
    • As an example, some soft and flex nibs will feel uncomfortable if writing at a high angle and with high pressure, regardless of how the nib is configured.
